LAST YEARS EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

The 2nd Annual 2011 FEMALE HIP-HOP HONORS will take place once again in Los Angeles on May 21, 2011. The Radisson Hotel will play host to the awards ceremony. The event will be a star-studded mega musical show with performances by the nominees, featured major label acts and appearances by film and fashion celebrities.

This year we will honor two of the most dynamic women in hip-hop.  Our first honoree Roxanne Shante is the 1st female Rapper to pave the way for women to come into the genre. Roxanne Shante was part of a phenomenon that took place in 1984. UTFO's song "Roxanne Roxanne" was a huge hit that year about their attempts to seduce a woman named Roxanne. One night Shante overheard WHBI's Tyrone Williams, Mister Magic, and Marley Marl discussing the fact that UTFO has skipped out on promised appearance.  Shante offered to record a dis record.  Her skills seemed up to par despite only being around 14-15 years old. Marley produced and she rapped the song, "Roxanne's Revenge" and it made them both famous.  She had a few other hits (written by Big Daddy Kane) like "Have a Nice Day" and also "Go on Girl" from the movie Colors.  She also did a duet with Biz Markie in 1986 called "Def Fresh Crew".  She also worked with Rick James on a "Loosey's Rap." Other tracks of note were "Payback" and "Freestyle" in 1987
1990 saw the release of "Big Mama" which took on every other female rapper in the game.

Our second honoree is Tenina Stevens (a.k.a. Suga-T) is an accomplished rapstress, songstress, songwriter, actress, producer, educator, businesswoman/CEO and the founder of “Sprinkle Me Fragrances.” In the early years, Suga-T joined her family’s recording label “Sick Wid It Records” as one of four members of the group “The Click.” The group members include Suga’s brothers D-Shot, E-40 and cousin, B-Legit. . Initially, the group released a single entitled “Captain Save A Hoe” and “Billy Bad Ass” to the underground which established a loyal fan base. The group received a national underground following that enabled them to sale 250,000 units independently. Furthermore, this positioned Suga-T and “The Click” as highly respected musical figures with an enormous and loyal following; and a body of credits that has built her own individual following. She is also highly recognized nationally due to a joint-venture between “Jive Records” and “Sick Wid It Records.” Their group collectively sold over 10 million copies during their 7 years with “Jive Records.” Suga-T, then the little sister of “The Click,” became the big sister and now Godmother of Hip Hop. After 15 years in the Music and Entertainment Industry, Suga-T is still holding it down and heading Northern California’s female Hip Hop Movement. Moreover, as a savvy businesswoman, she has worked diligently in front of the camera and behind the scenes during her career and has utilized her popularity and position as a platform to create opportunities for herself and many others

We will also Honor Shawnna with this year Lyrics for Life Award. She was the first female artist signed to Ludacris' Disturbing tha Peace Records. She is a former member of the female Chicago rap duo Infamous Syndicate and she is also the daughter of the blues musician Buddy Guy.

She is known for her rapid fire delivery and her sexual themes. She is one of only six female rappers (others being Lauryn Hill, Da Brat, Missy Elliott, Lil' Kim and Remy Ma) to ever have a #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 with 2003's "Stand Up" with Ludacris.

Shawnna is currently signed to T-Pains Nappy Boy Records and slated to release a new LP in 2011.
